German Courses for refugees

German language courses for refugees qualified to study at university

In cooperation with the University of Göttingen, the Institute for Intercultural Communication (IIK) offers German language courses free-of-charge to refugees who have been approved by the International Student Office to study at the university. These places in IIK language courses are funded by the DAAD. The reduced fee of 70€ to sit the DSH exam however, is to be paid by participants.

Are you a refugee considering studies at the University of Göttingen?

Since April 2016 IIK has been offering places in its German language courses free-of-charge to refugees who meet the university’s enrollment criteria for a Bachelor’s Degree and can prove their educational qualifications with certificates.

If applicants cannot present the required documents, another way to prove their ability to study will need to be determined. In these cases the University of Göttingen will assist in finding an individual solution.

For general advice on your university studies or prospects, guidance on selecting a German language course or information on being a guest student, please contact:

To receive a supported-place in IIK's German language courses, refugees first need to prove their ability to study at university. This is determined by the International Student Office, which is part of Göttingen International.

Procedure for determining eligibility for DAAD-supported language courses

To determine whether an individual with refugee status is eligible for a supported-place in the German language courses at IIK, the following documents must be submitted to the University of Göttingen's International Student Office either in person or via email:

  • certificates for studies completed in the country of origin (in German, English or French)
  • identification/proof of refugee status, including name, nationality and date of birth.

The International Student Office will confirm directly with IIK when it is determined that a refugee is able to participate in a language course.

After receiving a positive answer from the International Student Office applicants can registrate for our course.

Since our language courses are preparatory courses, you have to speak to your case manager or the responsible official if you are obliged to participate in an integration course and until when you must have attended it. Our courses are not integration courses; therefore, you have to ask your case manager or the responsible official how to combine our language courses with the integration requirements which are important for your stay here in Germany.

As part of IIK’s intensive German language course program, refugees approved to study at the university will have the opportunity to participate in:

  • Language courses from levels A1 – C1 (GER)
  • Classes that prepare students in the relevant learning areas to sit the DSH and TestDaF exams
  • The preparation course C1plus for the DSH, which prepares students for this particular style of examination. Successful completion of the DSH is a requirement for university entrance.

The IIK program provides:

  • The language skills required to be accepted into a university course
  • An introduction to the German academic culture
  • Support for independent learning. To create an inclusive learning environment, refugees will share their classes with students from non-refugee backgrounds.

Students can also request to receive:

  • language counselling
  • language exchange (German-Arabic)
  • cross-cultural training

In addition, IIK can offer:

  • Contacts in various faculties and advisory services that help students prepare for their time at university
  • Referrals to legal or psychological support services.

The DAAD will cover all costs for course fees and books. For participants who live in the districts of Göttingen or Northeim travel expensives could be covered after an indivual request.

To register for a course, IIK requires a completed registration form and a copy of your personal identification.
