INTERNATIONAL AUTUMN COURSE 2020

German language lessons

The language course (modules A and B) comprises a total of 92 lessons (each lesson lasts 45 minutes):

gall-12Module A) General German lessons (communication in everyday life)

68 lessons, 9:00-10:30 and 11:00-12:30 in the mornings
(On September 10th you will take the placement test in the morning, therefore on that day the general German lessons will only take place in the afternoon from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.)
● speaking, writing, reading, listening comprehension, grammar
9 levels / 10-11 groups: from basic level A1.1 (beginners without a previous knowledge of German) to advanced level C1
● The autumn course covers approximately half a CEFR level
(i.e. B1.1 or B1.2, not the complete B1 level).
● Additionally you can join optional tutorials on four days: 2x oral German and 2x grammar games A1-B1 resp. literature & creative writing B1-C1.

U1Placement

● The appropriate level is assessed by means of a written placement test which takes place on the first day of the course (10/09). We aim to form groups with no more than 14-18 participants at each level.
● During the first few days our teacher will check if the assessed level fits your speaking and understanding abilities as well. In consultation with your teacher you can still switch to a higher or lower level until Friday, September 13th.

Module B) Introduction to Academic Communication (for levels B1-C1)
resp. Additional general German lessons for levels A1 and A2

gall-224 lessons, 14:00-15:30 in the afternoons
● 4 fields of study: Law, Economics, Humanities & Social Sciences, Natural Sciences. This means that topics and material in class are taken from these fields of study. The single subjects of the participants cannot always be incorporated.
● Contents: reading academically orientated articles;
subject-specific vocabulary; presentations and discussion;
typical grammatical phenomena of academic communication;
introduction to term papers, expertises, lab reports, etc.
Precondition for participating in the "introduction to academic communication" is an intermediate knowledge of German. The afternoon classes will be held for mixed groups (levels B1-C1).
● Participants of the basic level A1 and A2 will have additional general German lessons instead (all subjects together).

Certificates

● All participants receive two ECTS certificates (European Credit Transfer System) upon finishing the course:
○ one certificate with a maximum of 4 credit points for the morning lessons (module A)
○ one certificate with a maximum of 2 credit points for the afternoon lessons (module B)
= a total maximum of 6 credit points.
● This requires regular attendance as well as participation in the tests resp. presentations conducted during the instructional period.
The Autumn German Course is organised / conducted by the IIK institute which is not part of the university but a non-commercial association offering intensive German courses in cooperation with the university.
For this reason the autumn course is not listed in the university’s course catalogue (“Modulhandbuch”) resp. the online examination management system of Göttingen University (“FlexNow”). The IIK can only issue paper certificates.
Nevertheless the IIK courses can be acknowledged as "external academic achievement" and transferred as DaF (German as a foreign language) course/examination component to the ToR (Transcript of Records).

Teachers and tutors

● All teachers have years of experience in the field of German as a Foreign Language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache or DaF), both in and outside of university.
● All teachers for the afternoon lessons have an academic background in the respective field of studies.
